A recap of Please hold my hand + I share a breakdown of different levels of the Infected!
First, understand that the Infected are Humans who have been infected with a fungus that alters their brain. This is inspired by a real fungus that grows in the jungle called the Ophiocordyceps Unulaterous
There are six stages to being infected:
Runners: People who have been infected after 2 days
Stalkers: Runners who have been infected from 2 weeks to a year - that’s when the clicking sound begins + use echolocation
Clickers: Over a year of being infected. Fungus molds over their head. The fungus acts like a megaphone to pinpoint prey
Bloaters: After several years of being infected. Covered in fungal growth armor, slow, blind, and very strong + vulnerable to fire
Shamblers: Alternative 4th form - infected several years and reside in water areas. They expel large spores from their body that causes acidic burns. Once it dies, it fills the air with spores - slow but can sprint too.
Rat King: Over 20+ years of being infected. A bunch of infected combined into one. They don’t just die, but parts will break off and attack. Visual Credit below:

Ellie took the little gun from Frank and Bill’s house, so she could have one on hand for protection. It came in handy later while saving Joel’s life. When I saw her pretending to shoot in the mirror, all I noticed was how tough she truly is although she’s very young and new to the outside world
While driving across the country, Ellie starts to joke with Joel and start listening to music by Hank Williams. I’m sure it was tough for Joel, because it may have reminded him of his daughter. By the end she told a joke that I personally found funny as well: “Did you know diarrhea was hereditary?” What? It runs in your jeans (genes)
There was a moment when Ellie asked Joel if she was considered family and he responded saying she was only Cargo
They reach an area controlled by Fedra and that’s when shit gets real. Just like in the game, a guy pretended to be injured and Joel decided to ignore him and that’s when the raid started.
Ellie helped Joel by shoot the guy who was very close to killing Joel. He felt really bad that a young teen had to shoot someone. But it was not Ellie’s first time having to shoot someone. Joel briefly taught her how to handle the gun properly
That’s when we start being introduced to Kathleen obsessing over Henry. This is also the part of the video game that gave me pause. I’m not ready for the next episode because I know what’s to come regarding Henry and his little brother, Sam.
Instead of Kathleen being a good leader, the infected is coming from under the ground, and she prefers to search for Henry instead of letting everyone know. It’s obviously one of the infected, but which kind? Note: The next episode will air before the super bowl. It feels like it went by fast!
